Boston Training: Week 6 Summary

Although I feel good (mostly) with how this week went, I still give my performance a B-. Sleep. Sleep. Sleep. That will be my focus from this point forward. I am not getting enough. I know that. I will feel so much better if I am just more consistent with the time I go to bed at night. The boxes in my living room will get unpacked eventually!

TOTAL: 53 miles

2/6 (Monday) - Pool Running 1 hour
Why are Monday mornings so darn cold?!? It makes it really hard to get in...and even harder to get out.
2/7 (Tuesday) - Intervals AM
We were doing anywhere from 4 to 6 - 1200s this morning. I just decided to take them one at a time and see how I felt. According to the pace chart, I should be aiming to do them in about 5:12. The first 4 felt really good. 5:04; 4:58; 4:54; 4:52 I really like the group I was working with - Brett, Tim, Maria, Jon, John, Layth - and although I fell to the back of the pack, it is fun to run intervals with others. I decided to try a 5th and about 600 meters in my legs started to feel jelly-like but I kept pushing and did it in 5:02. I thought I was done but Tim, John and Jon peer pressured me into doing one more. I am happy they did. Even though that one was a little slower at 5:04, I am still pretty excited that I did them all significantly under my goal time. I had so much fun and left the track happy!
2/8 (Wednesday) - 5 miles EASY PM
The Fun Run was cancelled tonight due to weather, so I did an easy 5 around Old Town after work - in the freezing rain. Fun stuff.
2/9 (Thursday) - 8 miles EASY AM
There is nothing like a solid night of sleep. I was asleep before my head hit the pillow. When the alarm went off at 5am, I was ready to get up. That is a good feeling. I ran an easy 8 miles on the Mt. Vernon trail towards Belle Haven then did some back/chest/core work. I need to get back into a lifting routine. I am not doing it consistently, but I guess if I can get a couple days a week - that is OK.
2/10 (Friday) - TEMPO
My plan was to do a 5K tempo this morning. I woke up pretty refreshed. Not sore, not too tired. It felt like Friday, but again, I felt ok. I did about a 2.5 mile slow warm up, then we started the workout. According to the pace chart, I should be running a 22:22 5K tempo run. That is about a 7:11 mile. My first mile was 7:12, my second was 7:10 and my last was 7:15. Yuck and the worst part was that it was hard. Who knows what was going on.
2/11 (Saturday) - 16 miles LONG RUN AM
I had such a good night of sleep! In bed at 9:25pm on Friday night! I am a very boring girl, but woke up ready to run. I ended up running with Stephanie D. It was fun getting to know her and we matched up really well. She really pushed it and pulled me along. I am really loving running with others. Why have I not done this before?!? Although this wasn't a perfect progression run (I ran the middle miles a little too fast), I ran a negative split and my last 5 miles were around 8 minute miles (take or add a few secs) and my last mile was 7:47. I got a massage this afternoon and it felt so good. She worked on the knot in my butt, which really isn't in my butt at all. It's my Tensor Fasciae Latae (TFL). My hip...adductor muscle. She really worked that sucker and it was the most beautiful discomfort ever. I can't explain it. She gave me some stretches to do and reconfirmed that I need to be more disciplined with my foam rolling. It's not painful. It does not hinder me from doing anything. It is just annoying and it has been annoying for the past 10 months. I am convinced that it is from all the the treadmill runs I did last Winter. Thanks treadmill. You suck. I will never run on you again.
2/12 (Sunday) - 7. 50 miles EASY AM
I ran nice and easy on this very chilly 20 degree morning. Brrrrrr. I did a full body lifting workout after which was so boring...besides getting to watch some guy in spandex do Rockette-style high kicks in the free weight room. Sometimes I just want to ask people why they do what they do at the gym. So weird.

  1. You had a great week! I ran this morning too (after my 16 on Saturday) and it was HARD and cold. Wish I could have gone as far as you - but I had a work event (events seem to be getting in the way - boo).

I also need more sleep - I dont think I can get enough :)

  2. Haha, you see the strangest things at the gym!

Sleep is the hardest part of training for me too. The more I THINK about needing sleep, the harder it is for me to sleep. :)

  3. Sleep is my number one priority this week as I prepare for Saturday's marathon. Your tempo run sounded pretty awesome to me. Making your pace goal give or take a few seconds is impressive. I love running with others too!
