Boston Training: Week 5 Summary

Ok. I am ready to put these past two weeks to bed and get back on track. It was a weird week. Although it was not a total wash and I ended on a strong note, I am ready to have a good week.

TOTAL:  42.75 miles

1/30 (Monday) - Pool Running 1.5 hours
The cold pool run this morning felt exceptionally good on my sore legs. I am obviously dehydrated. Before I went to bed last night, I drank 50 oz of water with some Nuun and I did not wake up one time to go to the bathroom. That explains all of the tightness. George has made it...um...perfectly clear what I need to do..."Drink more fluids!! If your calves aren't feeling perfect tomorrow morning, then don't even think about running the 800s." I will be chugging water all day to hopefully flush out the all the junk. It really does work! I don't want this to effect my track workout tomorrow.
1/31 (Tuesday) - 3 miles EASY PM
Wow! This is just crazy. I am still sore from Sunday's run. My quads are sore now too! Seriously. This is really frustrating because it was totally avoidable and now I made myself miss a speed workout. A fun one too! My body is being weird. I have been drinking water and Nuun non-stop, but my body is holding on to it! My hands are swollen, I feel bloated and puffy. My stomach is upset. I think the sorbitol in the Nuun is to blame. I woke up last night drenched in sweat. What the hell is going on? This evening, my muscle soreness was subsiding, so I decided to do an very easy 3 miles. I can't remember the last time I ran only 3 miles. I am sure stress has something to do with it. I have several reports due at work, I found out last night I have to put Oliver to sleep tonight and I am moving on Thursday. This isn't fun.
2/1 (Wednesday) - 5 miles EASY PM
I did my first Fun Run with CAR in Falls Church starting from Road Runner Sports. I was cranky going into the run, but it is pretty amazing what a run (and the companionship) can do for me. I had basically been by myself all day, working on my reports, being sad about Oli. It was nice to be around good people. The great news is that I am no longer sore and feeling about 90% back to normal.
2/1 (Thursday) - 8 miles EASY AM
On the run last night, Amy mentioned that she was meeting 2 other CAR teammates in DC at 6:30am to do an easy 8. I wasn't shy about inviting myself. Ha. Since I am moving today (and I am basically surviving on adrenaline) I was wide awake before 5am packing.  It was a pleasant run and again, it was just nice to be around people.
2/3 (Friday) - TEMPO?
I was feeling pretty good last night, which may have been the last of the adrenaline talking, so I told George that I could handle a tempo run. He told me earlier in the week to take it easy this week - I have a lot going on, just do some nice slow runs and get ready to kick it into gear next week. I showed up at the track at 6am anyway. After my 2 mile warm up, I was tired. The past 2 weeks had caught up with me. George let me start the tempo, but told me to take it easy/steady. After 2 miles, he told me I was done. I wasn't upset. I felt my form and stride get uglier by the lap. It was only a little after 7am at that point, so I went to the gym and did some core work. My activities this weekend will include 3 things: EAT, SLEEP, RUN AND RELAX. I may not even unpack a box! I need to be ready for next week. I can not have another "off" week.
2/4 (Saturday) - 14 miles LONG RUN AM
I woke up very energetic and with a good attitude. Thank goodness. I needed a good run. I had a great time running with Stephanie and Melody again. It's so fun getting to know these ladies. They are so awesome, down to earth, genuine and inspiring. I am becoming more confident in my ability to execute a progression run. Every time I do it, I think it is a fluke. Ha. My first mile was 9:08 and I ran my last 5 miles in 8:11; 8:12; 7:43; 7:39; 7:35 AND I felt good!
2/5 (Sunday) - 7. 75 miles EASY AM
I was going to run on my own, but decided to meet CAR again. My cat, Shelby, kept me up most of the night crying. I am not sure why. I hope this doesn't last though. I am sure she is just adjusting to the changes but it was super annoying and not something I needed. I averaged about an 8:30 pace.

  1. I cannot do the nuun, I too feel like it makes me bloated and then gives me other issues once I start running. I made the switch to GU Brew Electrolyte Tablets and have been THRILLED with them! In my research they had one different ingredient, Nuun has something used in laxatives (and that's all I have to say about that!).

Sorry you had a rough run week, but you had a busy week with a lot of stress! Plus, you KILLED that progression run (and that's how I feel everytime, I wonder if it will happen again? and it always does, so yay!) :)

This week you'll feel better, get some rest, and some GU Brew! :)

  2. I can't do Nuun OR GU Brew OR Gatorade.

Heed and Ultima work for me. And tons of plain water, coconut water, and herbal tea.

Chocolate coconut water -- nectar of the gods.

  3. I like Nathan Catalyst much better than Nuun. I'm not sure why since I've never looked at the ingredients, but I still use Nuun because it's easier to get, haha.

Great week despite your challenges and next week will be even better!

  4. Way to bounce back, lady!

I have noticed in the past that nuun will give me bloat - but it also coincides with food I shouldn't have had, or staying up too late. So who knows.

Here's to an easy, less obstacle strewn week!

  5. I'm glad you were feeling better by the end of the week. Hopefully this upcoming week will be a good one!

I know I was super dehydrated yesterday since I was still feeling thirsty after multiple large glasses of water + nuun. I'm trying to keep chugging water today since as you pointed out, it can throw off your whole week.

  6. Isn't it amazing how you can leave work in the worst mood, run with some friends, and go home feeling great? We all have those off weeks, it just makes you appreciate the good runs more! And you have a LOT going on, I don't know how you are doing as well as you are! Damn, those last paces for your long run are amazing. You are going to kill Boston! Maybe if the RnR half in DC has a turnaround I'll see you in the lead?

Take some time to recharge this weekend! Enjoy the new house!
